From the Director

Dear Friends of Hawaii Astronomy,

The Deep Impact event on the evening of July 3, 2005, proved to be a unique moment for astronomy in Hawaii. Not only did this spectacular science mission involve the Mauna Kea and Haleakala telescopes as key contributors to the impact experiment, it also was a milestone in the Institute for Astronomy's engagement in education and outreach.

Never before had the Institute become involved in such a large series of events reaching out to such a broad community. Ten thousand people in Waikiki at Sunset on the Beach, thousands at the Bishop Museum, and many hundreds at the Mauna Kea Visitor Station, at UH Hilo, and at Maui Community College watched the impact together with IfA staff, students, and faculty. It was an incredible success, which made the many days of careful preparation for these outreach events so very worthwhile. In my five years at the IfA, I have never been as proud to be part of this Institute as I was on this evening.

I want to thank all our staff, students, and faculty for their enthusiastic engagement that made Deep Impact an event for everybody in Hawaii. We will continue this community involvement. Astronomy is a beautiful and exciting science, and we will do everything we can to share the scientific results with the people in these islands.
