University of Hawaii Gemini Proposals

The Gemini Telescopes are scheduled using the same two six-month semesters that most of the other Mauna Kea telescopes use. These are:

August - January	April 1

Proposals for University of Hawaii observing time on Gemini North must have a Principal Investigator affiliated with the University of Hawaii.

University of Hawaii astronomers may also apply for observing time on Gemini South. This must be done through the NOAO Gemini Science Center. Their deadline is usually one day earlier than the UH deadline.

Preparing your proposal

University of Hawaii proposals should be prepared using both the UH research proposal form and the Gemini Phase I Tool (PIT). Be sure to select UH as the Gemini partner when submitting the PIT version of your proposal.

Joint proposals

All joint proposals must be submitted using the Phase I Tool. The Phase I Tool produces an identical proposal that is submitted to each of the National Time Allocation Committees. Because of the time zone differences, and slight variations in deadline dates, UH astronomers are strongly encouraged to complete and submit any joint proposals by 10:00 HST on March 31 or September 30.

In order to reduce paperwork, UH astronomers may submit their joint proposals as an appendix to their UH research proposal. However, the page limits on text and figures for the scientific justification still apply. For example, if one page of text and one page of figures is used for the scientific justification in the joint Gemini proposal, the scientific justification of the remainder of the research proposal must be limited to four pages of text and one page of figures. In general, it is better to include a condensed version of the joint proposal within the UH research proposal.

Please note that although the scientific justification of a UH proposal may contain up to 4 pages of text, most of the Gemini partners have much more stringent limitations on length (e.g., US 1 page). Therefore, it is strongly recommended that joint proposals are kept short.

A computerized proposal acceptance system has been installed to accept PIT proposals. Be sure to select UH as the partner when you submit your PIT proposal.
